introduction
USM and ADEYAKA with the experience of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, organise the third edition of the Pavilion Workplace competition with the aim of reflecting upon workspaces and offices.
The Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the 1929 International Exposition, is to be used as the setting for the interior design proposal.
The competition is open to all professionals and students from the fields of architecture, design and interior design and, in the present 2023 edition, coming from Denmark, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The jury will grant one first prize and two honourable mentions for each category (professional and student).
moduLAB objective and space
The Barcelona Pavilion, an emblematic work of the Modern Movement, has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects. It was designed by the architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich as the German national pavilion for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.
The competition uses the Barcelona Pavilion as the moduLAB space with the aim of generating a framework for reflection on the current conditions of offices and places in which people carry out their professional activities, and explore what they might be like in the future.
Pavilion Workplace will provide to the participants with a wide range of USM modular pieces of furniture for workspaces in order to develop their proposals.
participants
This third edition of the competition is addressed to all professionals and students from the fields of architecture, design and interior design, from Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Denmark – with Copenhagen as World Capital of Architecture 2023 –, who are interested in reflecting on workspaces and offices. Participation is open to both teams and any individual under their own name.
Those who have direct family or professional ties to any member of the judging panel who make the selection of the proposals are excluded from participating.
Participants from previous editions can compete again with the exception of those who were winners or finalists in any of the categories.

entries
The project must be presented on one single, horizontal, DIN A2 panel (1.700 x 1.200 px / 72 dpi / max 8 Mb) in .jpg format.
The panel should be sent via email before 11th September 2023 at 23:59 GMT +2 to the following email address: competition@miesbcn.com
The panel should include all the graphic information necessary for the adequate definition and interpretation of the proposal: plans, photomontages, info graphs, perspectives or any other graphic expression that defines the project. The panel should also include a brief text explaining the project.
In order to guarantee the impartiality of the jury, the projects will be presented anonymously along with a motto or slogan to represent it, which will be placed on the upper right-hand side of the DIN A2 sized panel. Therefore, the panel, which is submitted, cannot contain any reference to the authorship and must only be identified by their slogan.
specifications
The projects must be carried out in the pavilion plot (interior and exterior spaces), without altering its architecture. In other words, maintaining all the original elements, without adding any fixed architectural element, such as walls, for example. It should be noted that the pavilion is already fit with all necessary facilities for comfort.
Participants are invited to study the catalogues of USM modular furniture to get to know its products and to use them to perform their proposals. The graphic resources are available for download here. You can also use the USM configurator clicking here.
The project must include, as its principal foundation, furniture and compositions from USM. Other furniture can also be used as long as it has already been produced by a manufacturer and a VR item of it exists. The winners will be asked to send the furniture elements using the following 3D compatible files for the VR project: .skp, .3ds, .dwg, .dwg, .obj, fbx, .3dm.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) proposals will not be accepted. By participating, the authors declare that they have not used AI technology to design their proposals.
prizes and categories
Two categories are established: professional and student. From all the entries the jury will select six proposals (three for each category) in order to appoint two first prizes (winning proposals) and four honourable mentions (finalist proposals).
Every first prize consists of a piece of USM modular furniture worth 2.500€. If the winning proposals are made by a team of people, only the team will receive the piece of furniture (not one for each member). USM will also welcome the winners at their headquarters in Munsingen, Switzerland (travel expenses not included), designed by the architect Fritz Haller in 1961.
In addition, the two winning projects will be reproduced with Virtual Reality (VR) experience technology and can be viewed in video format during the awards ceremony. The organization will also assume travel and accommodation expenses (one night) for the first prize projects (maximum two people per team) to attend the ceremony on November 9 at the Barcelona Pavilion.
Every honourable mention will receive a present from USM and ADEYAKA. All other participating projects will be published on the website after the publication of the jury’s verdict.
